Yorkshire & Lincolnshire Business Link

Yorkshire & Lincolnshire Business Link
Description: Like a million dollar bill in Zimbabwe, by the time I’ve finished writing this month’s editor’s notes, they’ll probably be out of date; such is the fluid nature of the current economic climate. The situation in the US has had everyone on the edge of their seats as we all know the consequences if they fail to act. Meanwhile, the credit crunch which first reared it’s ugly head in the middle of last year has finally done for one our region’s oldest and best known brand names – Bradford & Bingley. Indeed, if Spain hadn’t adopted the euro all those years ago, I’d recommend we all started using the peseta, especially given Banco de Santandar’s growth to date. Santander now owns Alliance & Leicester and Abbey National, of course, and managed to cherry pick the best bit of the Bradford & Bingley. But even Santander aren’t exactly riding on the crest of a wave as the moment. Shame really - I was hoping that straw donkey I bought all those years ago in Barcelona would be worth a mint by now. Sure, the government learned its lesson from the Northern Rock debacle and acted quickly and decisively. And as much as the Tories are moaning about how Labour has handled the Bradford & Bingley collapse, could they really say they’d have been able to do anything differently? But, should this be left to the politicians to sort out? On the one hand guaranteeing everyone’s savings lets many of our financial institutions completely off the hook and could lead to some taking advantage. On the other hand, failing to secure depositors savings could lead to yet more bank runs. What was clearly needed in the case of Bradford & Bingley was a market solution, and a buyer from the market to take over the whole organisation, not just part of it. But without one coming forward, I think the government handled this one as well as it possibly could. Unfortunately, I didn’t quite have the readies available at the time… As those of us who survived the last recession know, as the downturn continues to bite, those businesses that didn’t set aside sufficient reserves during the hey days will fall by the wayside. The good news is that as the economy picks up again those of us who emerge will be able to enjoy a larger market share, better staffing and solid foundations on which to grow. That’s why we’re continuing to highlight ways in which businesses can survive and even prosper, rather than focusing on the doom and gloom. We know we’ve got some of the best entrepreneurs in the world amongst our readership – now it’s time for us to go and show the doom mongers just what this region is made of!

Yorkshire Today

Yorkshire Today
Description: Well, summer finally arrived, and although we’ve had our fair share of rain when the sun has shown its face it’s been hot. Very hot in fact, especially here at Yorkshire Today towers! Much is made of the great British summer, and how we don’t seem to have had one since Ted Heath was in power, but as every time the thermometer goes past 15°C, my better half decides we should go on ridiculously long walks in the country - understandably, then, I prefer it when it’s a couple of degrees lower! I recall as a kid how I used to look forward to that time of year when Blue Peter would sellotape a poor old tortoise into a box - for some reason that escapes me he always seemed to be called Cyril - and then they’d stick him in an airing cupboard to hibernate for winter. Maybe if I’m lucky, the Yorkshire Today team will do that to me but in reverse. Here’s what I propose… just after Easter, stick me in a large trunk and pop me in a climate controlled room – bring me out when the weather drops to a comfortable level. Not that I mind hot weather if I’m holidaying - as no doubt a few of you lucky readers will be doing. Its just that when you’re as hot as a pair of sheep-shearer’s gloves, you want your shorts on, not a shirt and tie. You also want to be on a sun kissed beach sipping margaritas, not stuck in an office sipping warm tea. Ah, well, I’m sure I’m not alone, and, of course, if you’re feeling in need of cheering up, then feast your eyes on the wonderful choice of articles over the next hundred or so pages. If that doesn’t get you going, drop me a line and we’ll form a syndicate, club together for a huge chilled room and some cardboard and sellotape and have the best summer ever…

Your M&S Magazine

Your M&S Magazine
Description: our M&S Magazine has an in-depth conversation with the M&S customer. It builds on the style and tone of the TV and press advertising, but moves it one step on from 'hello, I'm here' to a deeper dialogue of 'help me, guide me'. It is the only communication M&S has that can do this – with around 4.6 million readers per issue, this means M&S can have over 18 million, 30-minute customer conversations a year. This is very powerful and these conversations convert directly into sales and profit.
